Proper material handling is critical. TPU is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Drying TPU pellets before molding is essential to prevent steam generation and surface defects. Use a desiccant dryer to reduce the moisture content to below 0.02% before processing.

  1. Temperature Control:
    TPU typically processes at lower temperatures than other thermoplastics. Set barrel temperatures between 180–230°C, depending on the grade.  TPU can be sensitive to shear heating.  Running a gentle screw recover profile can help minimize excessive shear heating and protect the resin before the injection step.

 

  1. Injection Speed and Pressure:
    Use moderate injection speeds to minimize shear stress and prevent material degradation. Optimize injection pressure to fill the mold completely without overpacking, as TPU is highly elastic and can deform under excess pressure.

 

  1. Cooling Time:
    TPU requires longer cooling times than rigid plastics to maintain dimensional stability. Uniform cooling ensures consistent part quality and reduces the risk of shrinkage or warping.

 

Mold Design Considerations

 

A well-designed mold with uniform wall thickness, rounded edges, and adequate venting minimizes material stress and ensures consistent part production. Use a polished mold surface to enhance the TPU’s natural elasticity and smooth finish.
